IPSE Awards: Finalist 2017

IPSE finalists 2017

IPSE: The Association of Independent Professionals awards 2017

April has already been a busy month for Sail Creative. We have been shortlisted as a finalist for the IPSE 2017 awards (Association of Independent Professionals), held in London.

Who are IPSE?

IPSE are the voice of 2 million independent professionals in the UK. They make sure independent businesses and people are represented to government. They are an invaluable organisation offering access to legal advice, contract templates, networking opportunities, discount on services, protection and information.

“The Awards, in their fourth year, are designed to recognise and celebrate the innovation and excellence of freelancers in the UK. The applicants are judged on a range of criteria including the strength of their portfolio, their passion and commitment to freelancing, business acumen and creativity and the distinctiveness of their offering.” IPSE, 2017

Judging Day

I (Mandy, founder), headed down to London on 13th April at the The Trampery, where I had to pitch Sail in front of the panel (James Gribben, IPSE, Emmeline Pidgen, Illustrator, and Caroline Morgan, IPSE). Each finalist also had to do a short film and podcast on their business, challenges and goals. The whole day was a real push of professional and personal growth, and was a boost of motivation. During the day, I focused on getting our passion across and what Sail was set up to do – offering bespoke branding consultancy with a focus on cultural, independent and community organisations; along with a passion to collaborate with other talented creatives. All of which, helps us to experiment and explore, to create meaningful work that challenges the status quo.

It was an honour to meet the other finalists as well as IPSE staff members. Being in an environment with other start up businesses was influential; we could share advice, knowledge and even chatted about future collaboration opportunities. Each person held a passion for their industry and self employment, and it was clear they loved what they do. Amongst them were a pattern designer, origami artist, photographers, software developer, artists and consultants. The diversity and quality was exceptional, it was an honour to meet them all as well as the IPSE team. The IPSE staff members were encouraging, knowledgeable and we had some interesting and insightful discussions about the industry.

I am positively overwhelmed that Sail has reached the shortlisted in the Freelancer of the Year Awards. Self-employment is hard work, but the rewards and recognition are invaluable. Being recognised at a national level is an honour, and has given us a huge boost.

The winners will be announced at the renowned Freelancer of the Year Awards in London on 8th June, at the prestigious Kings Place near Kings Cross. There are also workshops and events during the day, open to freelancers, students and professionals on a ticketed basis. It is a nationwide celebration, and a great opportunity to for professionals to take knowledge from expert workshops and panels. Events take place in London, Manchester and Bristol. We are looking forward to the workshops, awards ceremony, and meeting more like minded people.

We have gained so much from the experience and opportunity already (all shortlisted have already won a year’s IPSE membership along with accountancy software), it has been great to be a part of. If you are self employed and have passion, commitment and determination, it’s well worth applying for next year. IPSE are an invaluable organisation, offering worthy support to the self employed professionals. The self employment and freelance industry is growing, and it’s great to know that support and encouragement, and opportunities like this are out there.
