Hello I’m Owen…

Hey Everyone, Owen here. As Sail’s newest team member I wanted to share a little bit about myself and my creative journey so far…

Before joining Sail I spent some time freelancing under the name of [blank spacecraft] I worked with a wide scope of clients raging from sustainable fashion labels, artists, creatives, arts and culture organisations and educational providers. I have also developed multiple typefaces, type specimens and published a design book.

When not freelancing I spent two years working as a lead designer for Durham Sixth Form Centre working on brand implementation and marketing strategy across print and digital, whilst also mentoring young creatives and supporting them on their own creative journeys.

Process is a big part of the way I work, avoiding tradition and delivering outcomes that are sometimes unexpected. A previous self initiated project has developed into a practice named Anti-Graphics, exploring the meaning of limited edition and developing next steps in the design process – leading to creative destruction. Physical destruction has meant entombing letterforms in concrete and trifling type specimens (with a cherry on top), whereas digital exploration has led to an obsession with maps and exploring code. Using London Underground maps and maps of NYC as starting points. I hope my process is going to lead to a collaboration with one of my creative idols David Carson in the not too distant future 🙂

Looking to the future… I am really excited to be starting at Sail and continuing to strive for change through the use of creativity, Sail’s studio beliefs and ethos have been highly inspirational to myself and has influenced many of my creative decisions to this day. My main goal is now collaborate with the team in making real world change. I look forward to sharing our work and getting to know each of you in the amazing Sail community.
